Last week I defined the gut microbiome, what impacts the health of your gut, why it matters, and explained what leaky gut is. Bottom line, leaky gut and an imbalance of bad gut bacteria is very common because of our modern lifestyle. If you have leaky gut and/or bad gut flora, your body becomes flooded with inflammation. Chronic inflammation in your body leads to the development of autoimmune conditions and other inflammatory conditions.
But I Don’t Have Digestive Issues
For many people, leaky gut and bad gut flora present as digestive troubles. But that’s not always the case. Every person is different in how this inflammation presents itself. Here are some of the signals that may indicate your gut is in need of some attention:
- Fatigue or poor energy
- Insomnia
- Headaches or migraines
- Joint pain or muscle aches
- Brain fog
- Anxiety or depression
- Eczema and skin irritations
- Stomach pain
- Acid reflux
- Bloating or gas
- Constipation or diarrhea
- Weight gain or resistant weight loss
- Acne or rosacea
If you’re struggling with any of these symptoms, there’s a very good chance you may be dealing with a food sensitivity or other type of food intolerance.
Food Intolerance 101
A food intolerance is not the same as a food allergy. When we think of food allergy, we often think of the person with a peanut allergy who ends up in the emergency room with a swollen tongue, unable to breathe. That type of immune response is immediate and can be life threatening.
A food intolerance is a different kind of immune response that’s much less deadly and dramatic but still annoying and troublesome. This type of reaction is delayed anywhere from a few hours to 72 hours after ingestion. This delayed response is what makes it rather difficult to pinpoint. It’s a common condition that causes millions of people (including me) a lot of suffering from symptoms such as those listed above.
Again, food intolerance is often caused when the gut lining becomes damaged (leaky gut) and undigested food particles escape into the blood stream. As mentioned before, that’s when the body’s immune system goes into attack mode because it sees the particles as invaders.
This also explains why, when an individual has a food sensitivity test, the results show common foods (that the person is eating regularly) are causing a reaction. My own test showed 25 different foods. These can even be foods that we think of as healthy! You eat them frequently. The gut is leaky. The body attacks the undigested food particles of those foods.
Because you’re eating those reactive foods on a regular basis, your body goes into a constant state of inflammation. Bring on the symptoms. The symptoms could be random or they could be related to an autoimmune condition or other health issue
Next week, I’ll talk about foods that are just plain toxic for everyone as well as some of the more common foods that people react to, and how to identify foods you might be reacting to
Learn it. Apply it.
- Do you regularly experience any of the symptoms listed above? If so, which ones? How frequently?
- As you consider this information, are there foods that you already suspect might be causing a reaction in you? If so, which ones? How often do you eat them? What kind of reaction?
